Fdny News

Thanks Anesti for that info. Its nice to know, according to His Honor, that there aren't any fires in those neighborhoods at night. Maybe he missed a few posts on here about a couple of very busy days.  Wasn't there Two Fifth Alarms, One Third, and Four Second Alarms. And if I have it right "FORTY THREE" other 10-75 or 10-77s. In July, Two Fifth Alarms in Queens. With 20 Less Companies, who does he think will fight fires if that happens again. Is Jersey City, Newark or Yonkers coming in to help out ? They all have their own money issues and company closings. So its not like the City can count on them.

The night closures are just the start to the closing of the companies on a permanent basis. You have to remember that bloomberg is a business man so saving a few dollars makes sense in the business world, but in the public safety world it's drastic. He's only saying night closures right now, but eventually it will evolve into permanent closures.

night closures may be a continuation of daytime closings that happen monday thru friday, examples are company medicals and education day. Each day tour approx. 12 to 18 companies are oos for the entire tour for the reasons stated. Plus every day tour and early in night tours units are oos for scheduled training at rock. this plan may just keep the companies oos for 24 hours in lieu of 9 hours in day, thereby rotating closures or browning them out.

I'm guessing this will start happening in july if it even gets to that point.

I believe this is for january since this is the mid year budget revisions, have heard come july budget more cuts are being asked of FDNY. Also an FYI that last Friday when all these major fires happened was BioPod day in FDNY, there was no education, medical or training on this day, all BISP was cancelled, so in effect all units were in service imagine if there was companies out of service for the day tour. Only exception would be mechanical oos of rigs.

Didn't the city fund the money for this year though??

I need to ask, "What is BioPod Day" ?

It's an annual drill for the department geared towards BHS and it's supposed to simulate or test how long it would take to treat the department members in the event of a chemical/biological agent attack/release. They give the members flu shots to simulate the chemical/biological agent vaccine.

The city council funded keeping the 20 companies open until june 30,2011, however this is a new round of cuts being asked of agencies FDNY 2.7% or so. That is why the night closing thing is being proposed in lieu of new closings. Wonder will happpen in spring of 2011 when next round of budget cuts for july is being hammered out, will city council have funds to keep 20 open?

Thanks there "tl-ff". I appreciate that.

A citywide exercise that simulates a biological large scale contamination.....it tests the FDNY s capability to inoculate w/an antidote the entire on duty force between 0600 & 2400 hrs on a given day....it has been done annualy for the last 8 years.....there is no actual contamination....originally each Member was given candy....in the last few years the flu shot is offered to those who want it....however all must show up at a predetermined site to evaluate the capability of administering large scale innoculations a predetermined schedule puts Units out of service & sends them to a local pod...or point of distribution..............more info from FDNYinsider............................The FDNY held the eighth annual BIOPOD exercise on Nov. 12, offering the trivalent influenza vaccine to all FDNY members.

The drill is held each year so the Department can be prepared and plan its response to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive incidents.

"I recommend the public get their flu shot this year to not only to protect themselves, but also their families," Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano said after receiving his vaccine at the POD located at FDNY Headquarters.

To reach all the FDNY's first responders, the Department set up 17 points of distribution (PODs) located throughout the five boroughs, and one mobile POD. Fire companies, EMS units and administrative staff were dispatched to the POD closest to where they work between 6 a.m. and midnight.

The Department also deployed its Incident Management Team to coordinate the exercise.

"This tests our preparedness and provides our members with an important vaccination that will protect them and the public," said Dr. Kerry Kelly, the FDNY's Chief Medical Officer.

The vaccine provides protection from two strains of the influenza virus as well as the H1N1 pandemic. Members are not required to receive the vaccine, but approximately 10,000 were available to FDNY members who chose to receive it.

The annual drill is conducted by the FDNY Bureau of Health Services in conjunction with the FDNY Bureau of Operations and is part of the City's overall emergency response plan that combines the efforts of the Fire Department with other city agencies, including the Police Department, Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Office of Emergency Management.

Based on what I've learned now, I think that's an Excellent Drill. Kills two birds with one stone. The FDNY gets to test its ability to protect each member, and at the same time, protect their health from the flu. I had no idea this had been going on over the last 8 years or so.
Maybe an example of what other depts may want to follow.
  Thank you.
