Not many details on the "explosion"...But many years ago there was a WNYF article about a water extinguisher "exploding".  It referred to a BLEVE....boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion".  In essence it simply means that the liquid inside a sealed container...whatever that liquid is....becomes steam as it is heated and displaces itself at a disproportionate rate.  As it does so, pressure builds inside that "container"...in this case the extinguisher...and it will fail at it's weakest point. The easiest analogy is popcorn.  The kernel has a bead of moisture inside...and it is heated.  It "explodes" and the kernel is reconfigured...popcorn.  Again, no details on this event...but it sounds like a BLEVE.  Stay safe.
