Full Job Description​


This position is in the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (DCFEMS). DCFEMS provides fire suppression, technical rescue, fire prevention, education, and pre-hospital care and transportation services to people within the District to protect life and property.
DCFEMS firefighter paramedics can work in a fast-paced, high call volume jurisdiction with unique and high-profile special events related to its status as the Nation’s Capital. The Department’s diverse mission also gives firefighter paramedics the opportunity to apply for positions in all four of its disciplines throughout their careers. Firefighter/Paramedic is assigned to one of approximately thirty-three fire stations throughout the District of Columbia. The incumbent will primarily travel by Medic Unit and Fire Unit in a prompt and efficient manner in response to calls for emergency medical care of critically ill or injured patients.
Duties and Responsibilities
Incumbent performs an initial and detail/focus assessment, including current medical history and physical examination in accordance with medical protocols. Stabilizes critically ill injured patients through the application of advanced life support techniques, such as intubation, peripheral intravenous insertion, defibrillation, and administration of pharmaceutical agents. Etc. Prepares and administers intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous medications. Extricates injured and/or entrapped patients by safely employing prescribed techniques and appliances. Manages emotionally disturbed, alcohol and drug intoxicated, and unruly patients.
Drives medic unit to a specific address or location of an emergency situation, choosing the most direct and expeditious route in a timely and safe manner, maintain life support care during transportation to the appropriate hospital emergency department. Reports, verbally and in writing, observations and emergency care given to the patient at the scene and in transit to the receiving facility for record keeping and diagnostic purpose. Upon request, provides assistant to the receiving facility staff. Incumbent performs as a firefighter responding to known and unknown emergency calls at minimal response time. Upon arrival at emergency location, relays conditions, life hazards and exposure to commanding officer. Examines structure for any signs of fire extension or other dangers and determines the safest evacuation route for occupant. Incumbent makes forcible entries, makes openings for ventilation and performs overhaul operations, operates hose lines and hydrant systems, drives and operates firefighting apparatus of significant complexity, including pumps, aerial ladder trucks, and rescue trucks. Operates and maintains various power tools such as saws, ventilation fans, extrication devices and others.
Qualifications and Education
Candidates must have successfully completed the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department’s Basic Probation Training Course and Evaluation Program OR demonstrate experience; providing pre-hospital emergency care to injured and/or ill patients, providing fire prevention, fire protections, and emergency operations to include structural firefighting, hazardous materials responses, disaster response/control and recovery, and confined space rescue, and maintaining appropriate reports, forms and documents utilizing medical charting and medical terminology.
License/Certifications

Must hold and maintain the following minimum certifications for the duration of employment:
(1) Firefighter I and II, (2) Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (EMT-P), (3) cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), (4) Basic Life Support (BLS), (5) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and (6) Certification as a National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic (NREMT-P) and any other certifications that may subsequently be required to maintain qualifications as a Firefighter/Paramedic.
Must possess and maintain as a condition of employment, a valid Driver's License
Working Conditions/Environment
Incumbent rides large emergency vehicles at a high rate of speed and often through crowded streets. Position involves exposure to all weather conditions and noise levels that are often difficult to talk above. The incumbent is exposed to irritation or discomfort from heat, smoke, dust, gaseous fumes, water, working in confined spaced (i.e. tunnels), radiation and chemicals. Strict adherence to policy, procedures and guidelines, including wearing of specified protective clothing and gear required to reduce the dangers and irritations potentials. Incumbent lives in close proximity with other in a dormitory-type environment for 24-hour (or longer) work shifts, sharing kitchen space, sleeping, cleaning, bathing and restroom facilities. Incumbent is responsible for basic housekeeping and routine maintenance of this environment.
Other Significant Facts
Incumbent must have operational experience in a 911 or critical care system as an Advanced Life Support provider at an NREMT-P or NRP Level, or equivalent experience. Equivalent experience must include experience that has provided the applicant with clinical skill in knowledge and application of pre-hospital basic and advanced life support emergency medical care and the resulting ability to perform such care at an expert level of competency.
Must maintain ability to pass self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) face-piece fit testing as required by OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard 29CFR1910.134.
Must maintain physical fitness as defined by ability to successfully complete annual timed fitness testing.
Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of appointment.
This position is covered under D.C. Law 15-353, the Child and Youth, Safety and Health Omnibus Amendment Act of 2004, effective April 13, 2005, as amended. For that reason, this position is subjected to annual criminal background checks, traffic record checks, or both; and you may also be subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment.

Collective Bargaining Unit: This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by Local 36. You may be required to have union dues or other applicable fees deducted from your salary.
Tour of Duty: Rotating shifts. The Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department is a 24-hour/7-days a week operation.
Position Designation: This position is designated as a Safety Sensitive position and is subject to mandatory pre-employment and periodic Criminal Background Checks and Traffic Records Checks (as applicable). This position is also subject to mandatory pre-employment and random Drug and Alcohol Testing. In this position, you may be disqualified from employment based on the presence of marijuana in test results, even if you possess a medical card authorizing the use of medical marijuana.”
