Earlier this afternoon, units were alerted to a possible house fire in the area of S Bayview Ave & Elinor Place. Responding units advised of the corrected address and for a working fire to be transmitted for a truck & garage fire. First arriving engine, 213, placed 1 line into operation and the fire was quickly extinguished with additional units at the scene performing fireground duties. Further investigation found 2 electric scooters with lithium-ion (Li-Ion) batteries to be involved. The Nassau County Fire Marshals Hazardous Materials unit & Investigation division responded for a cause & origin investigation and for removal and disposal of the Li-Ion batteries. Shortly after leaving the scene, 213 was called back to the scene by the Fire Marshals for additional spontaneous combustion of cells within the batteries housing. All units were under the command of Chief of Dept Donnelly, 2100. While we are unsure of the cause of the fire, we cannot stress the importance of storing equipment and devices operated by Li-Ion batteries properly. We urge all residents to use extreme caution with these devices. This is our Departments 2nd instance involving Lithium Ion batteries in the last 7 days.
