Incident Location: 162 Wellington Road
Early this afternoon, the Nassau County Fire Communications - FireCom alerted the Department to a house fire on Wellington Road.
Upon arrival, units were met with smoke showing from the rear of the house. The fire was located in the basement of an abandoned house that had recently been sold.
Crews were met with heavy colliers (i.e. hoarders) conditions on all floors of the home including the basement; making for a high risk of fire spread and more challenging operations that had to be conducted. Despite the colliers conditions, the crew from the 1st due Engine (Engine 142) quickly stretched and advanced an attack line into the basement and extinguished the fire, containing it to room of origin.
Searches were conducted to ensure no civilians were inside the home, even though neighbors reported it abandoned. Overhaul occurred to make sure the fire did not spread to the other floors and after investigation, no fire had spread from the point of origin.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Office of the Fire Marshal - County of Nassau and Nassau County Police Department Arson/Bomb Squad.
