A Tri-Community Joint Fire Department firefighter died in the line of duty at the scene of a house fire on Wednesday night.
The Huron County Coroner’s Office on Thursday identified the man as 41-year-old John Saunders.
The fire broke out at a home in the 700 block of U.S. Route 224 in Willard, which is near the New State Road South intersection.
A 911 caller just after 10 p.m. reported smoke coming from the top of her neighbor’s home and garage. The residents weren’t home at the time, the caller said.
The cause of the fire has not been determined. The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Fire and Explosion Investigations Bureau; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; and the Huron County Sheriff’s Office are now investigating.
