City of Groton FD was dispatched to 116 Mumford Avenue for heavy black smoke from a garden apartment. Heavy smoke was located in the hallway and a first alarm assignment was requested. In addition to the City of Groton, units responded from Electric Boat FD, Poquonnock Bridge FD, and Old Mystic FD. A unit from the Sub Base FD responded as the FAST team. The fire was limited to the kitchen on the second floor. The occupants of the second floor apartment had to be relocated by the Red Cross as well as the occupants of the first floor, due to water damage. A cat perished in the fire. EMS units from Groton Ambulance and paramedics from Lawrence and Memorial Hospital were on scene as well. One firefighter was treated for a minor injury. A unit from Noank FD relocated to City of Groton FD HQ.
