Ground Zero first responders who died of Sept. 11-related health conditions can now receive federal Medal of Valor

These people are heroes. Simple as that. More needs to be done that just giving them the Medal of Valor after they're gone.

I agree. It does not make sense.  If you perform an heroic act which is eligible for public recognition and an award, why does one have to wait until they die for it to be awarded?

It is good to honor next-of-kin, but it would be so much more meaningful and even joyful to honor the member with their family, friends and loved ones before they pass away. 

The US military does not wait for someone to pass away to award medals for heroism and performance above and beyond. 

If a person has earned the award, honor them.

Judging by the reaction online to the medal of valor i think most if not all first responders would prefer to have their health care looked after rather then get a medal after they or their colleagues have gone

Its rather sad to see near weekly / monthly posts by people like John Feal or Ret FDNY FFs having to travel to Washington to beg politicians for help on health care
