Anyone know a decent make of handy talkie for listening to FDNY in the City? Visiting in Jan would like to pick one up

Cheers

In most cases a handy talkie is a 2 way radio which is illegal to possess by civilians.  You would be better off if with a nice scanner (they also cost less money).  The two major manufacturers are GRE and Uniden both of which are available at a number of places online.  Radio shack also sells them from these manufacturers plus some with their own name (which are manufactured for them by GRE).  I don't actually monitor FDNY but I'm sure somebody who does we'll be able to give you more information on which units work better for that purpose.

Check with "mikeindabronx", he bought a small scanner that picks up the FDNY great, and it wasn't really too expensive. I think he bought it at Radio Shack in the Bronx. Can you help us out here Mike ?

I have a GRE but it was pretty expensive because it picks up digital also. But for me, I can't even program the thing.

The GRE PSR-120 is a relatively inexpensive basic receiver that has the 6.25 kc channel tuning required for FDNY UHF monitoring.  It also covers the standard VHF public safety bands should you want to hear FDNY on VHF.

Sorry bulldog thats what i meant i just thought you guys called them Handy Talkies. Ok thanks for the info guys its appreciated

Also IRISH, if you have a smartphone, there are many scanner aps out there that pick up great anywhere, even from way out of state. 5-0 Radio Free is the one I have. I can listen to anywhere in the city from my phone. I'm not a huge technology guy, but if you have the phone, and don't want to spend any money, that's what I'd suggest.

Years ago my wife got me a hand held scanner for christmas.......It says radio snack on the front and says scanning receiver PRO 30 on the back.....you can program it with different freq s...I live in Queens and can pick up all the 5 boros pretty good.......My granddaughter broke the antenna......Anyone have any clues as to buying just the antenna........thanks

I'm guessing that no matter how smart it is, a cell phone set up to work like a champ in Eire won't work at all in the U. S of A.

Actually, a lot of them now will work worldwide which is very nice for travelers.

Correct Bulldog i can listen to FDNY on my mobile (cell) phone over here and get better reception then listening to Dublin Fire Brigade on a scanner.

The problem with using My Cell over there is the cost. It would be free in WiFi Zones but  outside of WiFi Zones id be charged at a big price

When I was in Ireland Declan, I listened to FDNY while in free WiFi on my IPad. But only when it was free
