Haz-Mat 1

I have a few questions about Haz-Mat 1 and what they do.

1. How do they staff both pieces?(Do they have both pieces completly staffed or is half the Co. on the Ferrara and the other half on the Kenworth/Pierce?)

2. Do they ever get to see fire? if so what are they used for?(I was wondering if they would be considered a 6th Rescue Co. since they have the blue shield... it seems like the fire department life would get alittle boring just doing Haz-Mat work considering you dont get big calls everyday)

Company is split in two and staff both.  They ride with 8 members.
1 Officer
2 Entry Team
2 Backup Team
2 Decon Team
1 Rescource Member

They don't see fire unless it's a hazmat thing, even then it's limited to dealing with the hazmat.  Example would be dealing with propane and stuff like that.

They all went to that company knowing that they won't do fire duty unless it involves a hazardous material and then it's only to mitigate the haz-mat threat. They can never be considered a 6th Rescue company, they do not have any training that the Rescues, Squads and SOC support companies receive. They're trained in every aspect of Haz-mat work and are all Specialists in the field while Rescue, Squads and Haz-mat Tech Engines are Haz-mat technician level 2 certified and Soc Support Companies, Decon Engines and CPC companies(?) are Haz-mat Technician Level 1.

In squad 252 I saw that they had the regular 6 guys on the squad rig than 2 guys left over with the haz tech rig, Those guys had a DF on thir shirts what does that stand for? And I am guessing there just a support truck those guys work over time or something or are they specifically for the support truck?

Got me on the DF... The squads and pretty much everyone else but hazmat do not staff the second piece.  Anytime they need the 2nd rig two members from the company will hop on and take it and follow the normal rig to the scene.  Squads, Hazmat tech's, CPC, SSL, etc, all work this way.

I know this topic hasn't seen much action in a while but I have another HM1 question. I was bored and searched FDNY on ebay and founf a picture of HM1 from back in the day with all their tools displayed next to ther rig and they have a hust tool displayed. Did HM1 do vehicle rescue aswell? Do they still do vehicle rescues?

I've seen several other Haz-mat units that also carry the "jaws" not for vehicle extrication but for use during an incident.  They can be used to press a plug or mat against the or to move a heavy object slowly minimizing the risk of sparking.  While everybody assumes that "jays" are only for vehicle extrication they can actually be used for many other purposes.
