Hempstead NY (Nassau) Working Fire 12/25/22

Earlier today, in bitter cold temperatures, the Hempstead FD battled this apartment fire on Sealey Avenue. Text courtesy Nassau County Fire Service Academy.

On Christmas afternoon the Hempstead Fire Dept. was dispatched to an odor of smoke at 6 Sealey Avenue – a six-story non-fireproof multiple dwelling. Calls began to come in reporting smoke at the location, including Hempstead Police who were advising of a working fire. When firefighters arrived on scene, they were met with fire showing from the windows of a second-floor apt. A working fire was transmitted, and mutual aid requested. As lines were being put into place a member of Hempstead Ladder 2 located an unconscious victim on the fire floor. That victim was brought to a window on the number one side of the building and lowered down where they were turned over to awaiting EMS personnel and transported in critical condition. Firefighters were able to keep the fire from extending further than what they were met with. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
