Haven't heard anything official yet. But here are some possible things

5th man
RRV independently or as a taskforce
BFU. / Reserve rigs

Any extra unit could be placed on the dars event channels as was the case with thw tornado.

have to hire 198 firefighters to make each engine a 5th man or maybe activate the reserve engines and just add the 20 or so units to field keeping all engines at 4 and paying ot on those units 1 officer and 4 firefighters. 20 x 4 =80 as opposed to the 198 needed to give each engine 1 more man, plus there has been plenty of ot each tour so adding the 198 may cause the need to hire over 300 guys. Cheaper to open reserves i think

As I remember, during many of the serious weather or blackout conditions, the RRV (Rapid Response Vehicles) were usually manned with two firefighters and an officer. I'm guessing, if that happens, wouldn't that give the city about 30, Three man, extra vehicles.
I'd be interested in what the FDNY does man extra during the storm. And if Deano (vbcapt) is out there, what is Virginia Beach F.D. doing for any extra people. As it stands, Virginia Beach is supposed to be hit pretty hard. Be careful out there Deano.
During a few of the hurricanes I remember working, our 14 man shift would be ordered to stay over. The shift that would be held over would get to go home to get things in order for the family, if we didn't live too far away. Now many members live 30-40 miles away so I don't think that can happen now. The city was decent in letting us do that and nobody ever abused that priviliage.
For all the members whether FDNY, Virginia Beach or anyplace affected, PLEASE Be Careful out there. Just too many waysof getting hurt out there. Of course I include police officers (Truck 4 etc), Con Ed Workers (fdce54 etc), and anybody else that has to be out there.
But I know one guy that Won't be out there during the hurricane. He's a P/T Security Guard who works at a Connecticut Chemical Plant.

I'm going to start threads in each Incident Alert section for the hurricane, titled 'Hurricane Irene Summary.' This way, any incidents or information is broken down by boro and we don't have to go through many pages in one thread. If you guys can post in the thread under each section (borough), it would make our coverage easier to follow. I figure the way they're talking, there will be a lot going on. I'll try and update as much as I can. Thanks!

I agree with Truck4.  I was an Air Force meteorologist for 19 of my 21 years in the USAF, and I'm a former Typhoon Chaser (see my signature element).  The TV weather people are really not interested in conveying the true story . . . they're interested in keeping your eyes glued to THEIR TV station.  One of the things that frosts me the most is those dingbats from the Weather Channel whose main purpose in life is to scare the wits out of their viewers while seeing how dangerous of a situation they can put themselves in.  For REAL weather information, Truck4's links to the National Hurricane Center are great for seeing what the storm is doing and is forecast to do.  You can link to satellite and radar pictures of it, too . . . and if you want to dig a little deeper, you can also call up the latest aircraft recon information (but you'll have to learn the codes used to interpret them).  For local New York stuff, don't use the TV stations . . . go instead to http://www.erh.noaa.gov/okx/  and click on your particular location to get what the serious people (The National Weather Service) think is going to happen.
