As noted in another thread, in 1968 I had a summer job in a plant to the right (east) in the bottom photo. Looks like just another day at work.
Since there was no toxic release or injuries (final determination of course to made by the PI attorneys rushing to the scene), the news media was forced to talk about, with the awe and wonderment typical of small children, the fact that burning hydrocarbons sure produce a lot of black smoke.
At the very bottom of the picture is Highway 225- known to the locals as the Pasadena or LaPorte Freeway depending on where you lived. It's not even closed. Before they raised and expanded the freeway right there was the local beer joint; "The Barn". The day turn workers' cars were trained to go there after work. The exterior walls were multiple garage doors which were opened so that the patrons could relax and enjoy the bucolic views of the freeway, chemical plants to the horizon, the railroad tracks, and the cement plant next door.
