Jersey City firefighters are battling a now-six-alarm blaze at Claremont and West Side avenues.
A six-alarm Easter morning blaze is raging with 10 Jersey City buildings showing flames, officials said.
The spectacular fire erupted at Claremont and West Side avenues around 4:23 a.m.
"I haven?t seen anything like this in years, years," Fire Director Armando Roman said as he barked orders amid shouts and activity at the scene. "We are stressed to capacity, and a Newark firefighting task force is on its way to the fire. It is roaring, roaring."
The string of two-story, two-family buildings has been evacuated and firefighters from other Hudson County fire departments are manning Jersey City firehouses as Jersey City firefighters battle the flames.
The fire stretches from 349 Claremont toward West Side Avenue and is across the street from the Jersey City Board of Education building.
The flames raced across the common cocklofts in the attached buildings.
Roman said additional alarms are possible and firefighters from other municipalities will likely be called to the scene to battle the flames.
The cause of the fire remains unknown.
