Yesterday was Dick Van Dyke's 100th birthday. Of more interest, it was John Davidson's Birthday also. On May 28, 1977 Davidson , a well known entertainer, actor, and TV personality was the headliner at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in Southgate, Kentucky. He was just about to go onstage when a sudden fire erupted. While helping several other people, he barely escaped death fleeing out a back entrance. 165 occupants, including Davidson's musical director, perished.

On another note, I knew one of the lawyers that masterminded the liability lawsuit for the Supper Club disaster. Investigators suspected the cause was faulty aluminum electrical wiring. As far as I know no point of ignition was ever determined and the ruins were bulldozed shortly after the last hose line was picked up.

Sounds like the lawyers didn't have a lot of deep pockets to go after. They went with the electrical cause to pursue a defective products suit. The problem with this angle was that they didn't know who manufactured the wire or who installed it. Plan B was..."Hell, we'll just sue everybody that ever made aluminum electrical wiring!"

It worked! The judge and jury fell for it and rendered a $10 million award. And my "pal" got his picture on the cover of Fortune Magazine.

Most folks think the actual cause was arson.
