FIRETRUCK IN CRUSH-HOUR CHAOS
By JOHN DOYLE and BILL SANDERSON

February 28, 2007 -- Here's the mangled mess left in Brooklyn yesterday when a firetruck smashed into eight vehicles, leaving a van heaped atop two cars and sending eight people to the hospital.
At 7:17 a.m., Ladder 123, its siren wailing, was heading south on Brooklyn Avenue in Crown Heights.

A Mazda Protege passed through a green light to cross the avenue, and smacked into the side of the big rig.

The impact sent the ladder truck careening, and it sideswiped a parked BMW and plowed into two other parked vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and a Jeep Cherokee. The Corolla and Jeep were pushed underneath a parked van.

"The firetruck was going fast - it couldn't stop," said witness Diale Phelps. "The only thing that stopped it were the two cars and the van."

Three cars parked further down the street suffered minor damage.

At Union Street and Brooklyn Avenue, passers-by rushed to aid the Mazda's driver and her son.

"She was so excited about getting her son out - she was in shock," said a witness, Roxine Mial.

The woman, her son and six firefighters were treated for minor injuries.
