On Sunday, July 31st 2022 at 02:09 the Larchmont Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire at 40 Ocean Avenue. Larchmont Firefighters were on scene within 3 minutes and reported smoke showing from the roof of a 2.5 story residential structure and transmitted a 10-75 response. A single occupant of the structure was outside upon arrival. Firefighters made entry and found fire in an upper level bedroom. Upon opening up the ceiling, heavy fire was found throughout the roofline. A 2nd alarm was transmitted at this time. Extinguishment efforts continued, however a ceiling and roof collapse occurred. An evacuation tone was ordered and master stream operations were initiated. A 3rd alarm equivalent was requested for additional manpower to the scene. After several hours, the scene was placed under control at 08:23.
Westchester County Cause and Origin determined the cause of the fire to be an accidental failure of equipment in the attic. The Larchmont Fire Department were assisted by New Rochelle Fire, Town of Mamaroneck Fire, Pelham Fire, Rye Fire, Scarsdale Fire, Eastchester Fire, Hartsdale Fire, Greenville Fire, Larchmont Police, Larchmont/Mamaroneck VAC, Scarsdale VAC, Westchester C&O, ConEdison Gas and Electric, Larchmont Water/DPW, and the 60-control dispatch and fire coordinator teams.
There were no injuries reported at the scene. We would like to remind everyone to take the same actions as the occupant of this home, which were to get outside and stay outside, and immediately call 911 when you see smoke or fire.
