It is with great sadness that news has broke today of the Line of Duty Death of Detective Garda Colm Horkan in Castlerea, County Roscommon last night
Detective Horkan was shot and fatally killed in the service to the community just before midnight 17th June on Main St Castlerea having served 24yrs with the Gardai.
Detective Horkan was on anti crime patrol alone when he spotted a male known to him and pulled him over. Having done so he requested backup and after that a struggle ensued.
As a Detective he was armed (Ireland has an unarmed uniform police force) and in the struggle his gun was removed from him and 15 bullets were fired. Its reported at least 4/5 hit Detective Horkan fatally killing him.
He was soon surrounded by colleagues from his station which was close by who attempted to save his life. Sadly it wasn't to be and a local priest delivered the last rights
Prior to joining the Gardai Colm was a Retained (on call) Firefighter in his local fire station in Charlestown, County Mayo
Thoughts today are with Colms family, friends and colleagues in An Garda Síochána at this difficult time
May he RIP
