When I was kid these type of apparatus were very popular, we had a 1967 Dodge quick attack engine(two man cab, 500gpm pump, 500 gallons of water, and room for as many that could fit on the tailboard) that served until 1988 when it was replaced by a regular 1250/500 5 man cab engine. The practice was to pull up, throw it in pump ( the guys would get dressed on the hose bed enroute to the fire), pull the reel line (1" booster hose) and attempt a quick knock on the fire. It worked great for years, if the fire was too much for the dodge, then they would pull it out of the way and the other engines would work the fire. As my dad says to me now, "all that stuff you guys have now is unbelievable, back in my day we put out alot of bad fires with a red line and the 'ole dodge".
