Go to www.Massfiretrucks.com for pictures of new aerial deliveries. Rigs will be assigned to L-17, 18, and 29. They are 2013 KME 109' AericalCat. The rigs are shown together on the title page, scroll down halfway for indidual pixs. 8)

Hey Grump,

Thanks for the pictures. Nice looking rigs, have to see if KME will hold up in Boston.

A couple of questions -

1) L-17 giving up their tower? Why ??

2) pre-piped waterways ? Won't that interfere with venting with the aerial or did Boston want to able to get a ladder pipe in operation quickly?

Take care,
Jim (aka 1261)

thought the same thing. how about an available operational TL for a spare. Or S/C to a large incident. L-17 was the first one to get the E-One on a test basis, in addition to their own stll/working fire response they went to ALL extra alarms. Guess it worked, no more TDA's, all RM. But they still get the aerials in the best position for rescues!

Is that a new KME cab and is it stainless steel or aluminum? Does the ladderpipe have the capability to disengage and retract from from the fly ladder to the next so it won't interfere with venting, window and/or roof rescues?

"City of Boston Chooses KME

October 09, 2012

KME is pleased to announce the City of Boston?s Fire Department has awarded KME and its sales representative Bulldog Fire Apparatus, an order for three 109? KME AerialCatTM rear mount ladders. These aerials will join the ten KME pumpers and two rescues already in service in Boston.

The aerials were specifically designed to meet the demands of a challenging urban environment with tight streets and numerous obstacles. The apparatus will be built on KME?s PredatorTM Severe ServiceTM chassis with a 475hp engine, automatic traction control, engine brake and transmission retarder for extended brake life and superior braking capability. The 109? steel ladders have a 2.5:1 structural safety factor and are manufactured using 100,000psi steel, the strongest in the fire service. They also include a 1500gpm pre-piped waterway and a 750lb tip load.

Given Boston?s famed historic streets and challenging turns and hills, the truck offers a short 14? jack spread, has a 208? wheelbase and is only 41? in overall length. The body corners at the rear are also mitered to offer an unsurpassed turning radius. Other unique body features include a combination of rollup and hinged doors, a coffin compartment with both top and side access and ladders accessible from the side of the body for easy access at crowded fire scenes.

According to John Kovatch III, KME?s CEO, ?We are pleased that these AerialCatTM ladders will be joining the KME pumpers and rescues in Boston. Over the last few years, it?s been a pleasure working with our nation?s first professional fire department. These 109? ladders include options specifically designed by the fire department for their unique challenges yet still include all the fire service best features of our rear mount ladders.?"

I would think using the 1500GPM pre-piped waterway is getting rid of the "BFD Tower Ladders". It would combine the best of the "blue stuff on the red stuff" with Boston's legendary ladder work. I think BFD should not have brought those TL's, 3, 10 and 17. There is another one but that is a different story! For some reason Chicago has not used pre-piped except for AT-1 in the Loop. But then again I am just a "buff from Boston".

But the Tower Ladder bucket gives the members the opportunity to get right up close to work from and is an excellent piece of equipment for victim removal.

But I'm sure there's people that know a lot more about fighting fires in Boston than I do. And that's why they get to make those choices.

TL 17 is a very busy ladder company.  BFD assigns a TL to working fires.  TL 3 and TL 17 are located next to each other.  Alot of high rise buildings in TL 17's downtown response area.  This is not a surprise - had been anticipated.  Maybe another ladder company will be converted to tower.

That's what I was thinking, Mack. TL 17(Back Bay) and TL 3(Downtown) are really right next to one another. Maybe they'll convert a standard Ladder Co. into a Tower for better coverage in other areas of the city, like Southie/Dorchester or East Boston.

Brighton/Allston D-11is really seperated from the city proper. After the "Kevin White" apparatus cuts D-11 lost an E and a T, E-34/L22. First due is usually E41/L14, and E-29/L11. E51 is almost in Watertown. Any smoke showing in D-11 you get E33/37 or L11/14, to cover, same as D-1 you get E4-8- (32) and L24 or L8. Mack moved to Fidelis Way in the 60;s our box is either 5195 or 5197. Long run for either D-11 trucks, another fire in D-11 or a deuce will not be good.  My uncle worked at FA he was a great cook, great @ Italian Sausage and Meatballs. Linda and I delivered to the "Hunington Ave Express @ 37/26. They were happy went to 33/15.  E33/L15 is a great house, in the 80's my wife was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer Grumpy knew. At the time I was @ Bunker Hill CC for a fire Science degree. 33/15 said park your car here and enjoy the neighborhood Cops do not bother us. Ironically 2 weeks later I was returning from buffing a multiple when I found a helmet from E-33 that had fallen from a rig. Same house, same group.same great Fire Department!!!
