Seems like every time tillers go out for bid are fewer of them. How many are actually in service these days?

Seems odd that no bids were received. There are a number of cities that do use them. Baltimore, Philadelphia and cities on the west coast to say the least plus a number of smaller departments.

Tillers are widely used, included with the examples noted above, the DCFD has mostly tillers. The FDNY has maintained its fleet of 13 for many years. The only variation I am aware of, L6 went from a tiller to a RM, back in early 90's. When L6 got a New Captain, he requested to go back to a tiller. Since then there has been no change, that I'm aware of anyway.

will the new tillers replace old ones? or are they actually gonna move 5 RM's into tillers? i mean it seems abit early to replace 7-8 year old tillers when most ladders in FDNY go for 10+ years....

I know a lot of departments are actually going to more TLs because of the added compartment space. I know at least 3 departments in this area (Louisville Kentucky) have gone from RM to TL for this reason.

Chicagoland area only has 2 tillers, Cicero and Evanston. Chicago got rid of theirs in the late 80'sCFD T-54 TDA (2).jpg

Weren't 151 and 173 tillers well into the mid-90's? I could be wrong but I thought when I worked as a medic in Queens from 92-97 that 151 was a tiller then.

A old apparatus list from 1994 shows Ladder 151 as a 1991 Seagrave, Ladder 173 with a 1989 Seagrave

Correct about 151 and 173; also about Ladder 6 which was a rear mount for a while in the mid '80s and early '90s for some reason in the narrow streets of Chinatown before going back to a tiller.

Ladders 26 in East Harlem and 28 in Central Harlem were tillers in the 70's as well as Ladder 25

I believe 27 and 59 Truck in da Bronx had a tiller in the early 80's.

The last trucks to transition from tiller to rear-mount (besides those that are still tillers, obviously) were (by date of the manufacture of their last assigned TDA)

1991 - 151
1989 - 173
1980 - 59, 26, 28 (theirs was also assigned to 30) and 27
