WHEN: TUES EVENING, 4 Feb 2025 at 1930 HRS, Eastern Time.
SPEAKER: William Jones, Industrial Telecommunications Manager.
SUBJECT: Inside review of the Feb 27, 1975, Telephone Building Fire that
occurred in NYC
Our guess speaker will be providing an inside look at a major telephone switch office that was built in 1925 to withstand an earthquake. The central office housed several different phone exchanges that served a 300-block area which included hospitals, educational campuses besides corporate headquarters and thousands of residencies. Most of the city’s 9-1-1 phone lines passed through that office. The multi-floor facility was considered at the time to be one of the world’s largest centers housing hundreds of miles of cable and related equipment. The 11-story fireproof facility was capable of handling tens of thousands of calls per hour. Until a fire broke out on February 27th, 1975.
This blaze significantly impacted NYC, FDNY, and the global fire service.
This will take place tomorrow, Tuesday night, February 4th, at 7:30 p.m., NYC time on the NYCFirenet Zoom link.
Afterwards, you are invited to join the fellow members at the virtual kitchen table.
Monthly Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month.
