Obituary for John James Lenihan, retired DETECTIVE, NYPD.
John James Lenihan, 92 of Staten Island, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2022.
Born Thursday, May 1, 1930 in New York, New York, he was the son of the late John Lenihan and Dorothy Fox Lenihan.
John proudly served in the United States Army until 1951. After being discharged John attended Bernard Baruch College, graduating in 1960 with a degree in Police Science. He went on to work for the New York City Police Department, holding various positions including Patrol Officer, Communications Officer and Detective Specialist. While working for the Police Department he founded and edited a police newspaper known as ''The Communication Officer''. John has 32 years services as a senior New York City Police Department Radio Broadcaster working The Bronx radio channels and later on the Citywide Radio system.
Along with his career John also was a member of the Train the Trainer-Associated Public Safety Communications Officers Inc. for over 20 years. He also received flight training at Ground School for Aviators at the Hayden Planetarium and Costal Piloting and Seamanship from the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary. John lectured at the New York City Police Department's Holy Name Society Annual Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral for the past 11 years.
Upon retirement from NYPD, John was appointed a Honorary Fire Alarm Dispatcher.
John was the devoted husband of Eve Mary Lenihan. Loving father to Patrick, Eva, and the late Dorothy. Dear brother to Tim and Sue. Cherished grandfather to 5 grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, August 15, 2022, at John Vincent Scalia Home for Funerals, Inc., 28 Eltingville Blvd, Staten Island, New York.
A Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, at Holy Child Church located at 4747 Amboy Rd Staten Island, New York 10312. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Staten Island, NY.
