On the afternoon and into the evening hours of Thursday, October 26th, 2023, the Oceanside Fire Department along with mutual aid companies operated on the scene of a signal ten [working fire] at Cousins Metal on Brown Court in the dead end off Hampton Road. Firefighters put multiple hand lines and master streams into operation for heavy fire in a large commercial building housing scrap metal and other hazards. Early into the operation East Rockaway Ladder 403 arrived on scene as the FAST and was immediately put to work to help locate members who gave maydays from inside of the structure following a collapse of shelving units onto the hand line and means of egress blocked. Fortunately, the firefighters who temporarily found themselves in that precarious position were able to regroup and self-evacuate. A total of two firefighters were transported from the scene to area hospitals – neither injured seriously. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and all fire department units were under the command of Oceanside Second Assistant Chief Sean Costigan [241B]. (Text Credit: K2M Photo)
