Today is the anniversary of the deadly fire in Chicago at Our Lady of the Angels school fire where 92 students and 3 nuns lost their lives. After this fire there were numerous safety improvements made nationwide.
I remember an article in Life magazine about this fire and one of the side stories was a father whose daughter was killed in the fire. He had had eye surgery the day before, his eyes were heavily bandaged and he could not cry for fear the tears would harm the surgical repair. The saddest thing I ever read. It has since been replaced by other sadder events and stories, but I'll never forget that dad.
