A Pipeline carries 1000 feet of 5" LDH. Regular Engine companies carry 500 feet of 5" LDH.  Squad Companies, Squrts and Water Towers have 3 1/2 " hose line as their largest supply line.  PFD 3" hose line has 2 1/2 " couplings so no adapters are required.
