^^^^^^ Contained in Nick's photos is a good sequence of accessing a street valve pit underground that has a stubborn street cover..... the purpose being in order to shut off a hydrant with a defective shutoff.

If I remember correct. The street valve is turned counter-clockwise to shut down. Where as the hydrant is clockwise. Also it's the probies and or junior persons job!

If the rig is over the shutoff and the hydrant has a split ring at the ground level, you may hit the hydrant
with a heavy maul and it will fall off its base with no discharge of water. Disconnect, call for the water
company and take up.

I believe both the hydrant and the street valve close counterclockwise.
