Since i know they are one of the few volly units in the city that you can actually hear on the radio and do get some calls. When a call comes in is  the fire house staffed or do they respond from home like other volly departments??

I've seen them driving their private cars to the firehouse to turn out on the rig from the firehouse.

Depends on the time of day. We activate the pagers and siren from the Staten Island Office. Then, we wait for them to call. Give them the assignment, and if they go, they go. There may be people there, they may be coming from home. It really depends.

They're not given the information prior to them calling?  Are they part of a response matrix with surrounding FDNY companies or do they operate independently?  Do they ever respond on their own or always with a regular FDNY response?

Richmond Engine was very politically connected with the S I Political machine.  Some FDNY Dispatchers would alert them before processing the alarm and rolling the FDNY companies (such as E165, etc).

JB, as far as I know from my experiences working in SI, they are not given info prior to FDNY being turned out. They are toned out when the FDNY units are getting their tickets. As far as operating independently, I don't know. From the folks I know that are members there, they seem to have a good working relationship with the companies in the area. Whatever happens after we tone them out is pretty much out of our hands. Hope that helps.

Don't know how working relationships are now but they were pretty good years back.  Before Eng 165 was created (about 1960) it took a while for E 159 and E 162 to get to Richmondtown and the areas around the golf course.  In the following years, they worked at the many brush jobs in their response area.  There were several members who later became FDNY members.

I believe it is allowed, but frowned upon for the firefighters. There are at least three or four guys in my job that are Vols over there.
