hi from germany,

can someone explain the difference between the safety battalion and the battalion chief who ist designated as safety officer on higher alarms ?

thx u all

The Safety Officer assigned on second alarms is a battalion chief who has received basic safety management training.  Most, but not all, battalion chiefs are so qualified. The battalion assigned is normally the third-due battalion for the location of the incident.  Acting battalion chiefs are not assigned as safety officers.

The Safety Battalion is staffed with highly trained nationally certified safety specialists.  It reports to the Chief of Safety Inspectional Services.  The Safety Battalion is assigned on second alarms and most major fire or emergency incidents.  Safety Battalion chiefs also handle complex after-incident investigations.

Follow-up question to the above posts:  When the Safety Batallion arrives on scene,  what does the BC that was assigned as Safety Officer typically do (assists Safety Battalion, reassigned to other duties, etc.)?

That depends on the incident. In the case of a large incident it's quite possible he will remain as an additional safety officer to cover a different sector of the fire ground. If he is not needed for that duty he will be assigned a different duty by the OIC.

Thanks for the quick response.
Forgot to ask where is the Safety Battalion stationed at?
