On the morning of Tuesday, December 6th, 2022, the Wantagh Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a house fire with people possibly trapped on Riverside Avenue between Alcona Street and Roanoke Street. Those first to arrive on scene were met with heavy fire showing from a two-story cape style private dwelling, one occupant safely out of the residence, and another trapped within. A signal ten [working fire] was transmitted, mutual aid requested, and a valiant rescue effort began to locate and remove the occupant within the burning home. While the first hand line was being stretched off Wantagh Engine 693 members of the Wantagh Fire Department made entry and worked to find the victim. They located the victim on the second floor; however, this person was unable to be saved. Firefighters went on to put multiple hand lines into operation for fire on the first and second floors of the residence. The cause of the fire which sent one firefighter to the hospital is currently under investigation. Wantagh Chief of Department Bloomfield [6900] had command of the incident.
