The South Farmingdale and Farmingdale Fire Departments were alerted for a house fire in the dead end of Plitt Avenue off Graham Steet about 17:45 on August 9, 2023. South Farmingdale First Assistant Chief McFarlane arrived first and transmitted a working fire and had fire throughout a two story home on arrival. Second Assistant Chief Fullshire arrived shortly after. Farmingdale Chief of Department Tortoso, and Assistant Chiefs Hammond and Kelly responded along with Engine 923, returning from an automatic alarm. 923 was first due and had a hydrant before the house, that crew stretched two lines to the house. Engine 972, Ladder 978 and Bethpage Ladder 3 pulled down to the dead end as the house was the last house on the street. The crew from 972 stretched to a hydrant on the other side of the dead end and crews from 972, and Bethpage Engine 905 stretched two more lines. One line was used to extinguish a shed that had also caught fire and had several propane tanks in it, setting one off and causing another to leak. Interior crews were making progress, but conditions quickly deteriorated as the roof started collapse, forcing members to evacuate. With all members accounted for, an exterior attack commenced with the hand lines and master stream from Ladder 3. The fire took over an hour to bring under control with a few firefighters suffering minor injuries. The family home at the time was able to exit the house safely. Firefighters were able to save numerous turtles from a pond in the rear of the house. Additional mutual aid to the scene was provided by the Massapequa Fire Department for a FAST Truck and Engine, the North Massapequa Fire Department, North Amityville Fire Company, and Seaford Fire Department for Ladders, the Amityville Fire Department and East Farmingdale Fire Company for Engines. The cause of the fire was investigated and was determined to be an issue with a propane barbecue. Rehab was handled by South Farmingdale EMS and Nassau County Police Ambulance Bureau.
