South St.Louis Car Fire & Rescue

St. Louis is an interesting department. They run that total Quint concept. Every rig is a quint, Engines are 75 footers, Trucks are  100 or 105 footers. If you're the second due engine on the assignment, you're actually going to operate as first due truck. From what I understand(and this was 3 yrs ago), they are looking to go back to regular Engines and Trucks and have one Quint per battalion.

According to the Nov/Dec issue of FAJ St Louis awarded a contract to Smeal for nine engines based on Spartan chassis with Gladiator Evolution cabs. Delivery is set for 2011. Also proposals for a 100' tower and a 125' rear mount. This order signals a departure from the St. Louis total quint concept.

I guess it didn't work out too well for them..
Actually they've been doing it for quite awhile so it couldn't have been too bad.  I read somewhere recently as part of the reason for the change away from the concept was $'s.  Which certainly makes sense when you consider the cost of a quint vs. a regular engine.

That is part of the reason as to why they stuck with it so long. Member were betwixed and between on their fireground duties. They had such a huge capital investment in equipment it would take a while to change. If I remember correctly it was done to save companies. The city fathers wanted to close some companies.

One of our departments in Tennessee tried that concept and terminated it as well.
