I recently found a video of interviews with firefighters of the city of Stamford, CT Fire Rescue Department(SFRD), with archive black and white footage of the Stamford FD dating back to the late 1970's and early-mid 1980's.(The peak-End of the "War Years" for New York and many New England and Northeastern U.S. citiese

Stamford, CT is currently the 4th largest city in the state of Connecticut and is located about 25 miles from New York City in Fairfield County on the Long Island Sound.

Back when the footage was shot, the Stamford FD operated out of 5 Fire Stations, with an apparatus fleet of 5 Engines, 4 Trucks, 1 Squad, 1 Rescue, and 1 Deputy Chief per shift. Today, the SFRD operates out of 7 Fire Stations, and shares quarters with 2 volunteer fire departments in the northern areas of the city, with an apparatus fleet of 9 Engines(including 2 Quints), 3 Trucks, 1 Rescue, and 1 Deputy Chief per shift.

Personal Alarm

Some memories of the Stamford Fire Dept. I remember that fire when the guys got hurt. I remember when there was a Squad running out of Stamford Fire Hqs. I remember when they ran that mini pumper. I think it ran as a second piece to the Squad and was called Engine 16(?). I remember when the Stamford Fire Dept ran the ambulances for the City. I remember when the downtown area was completely changing from the older buildings, and becoming the High Rise Capital for Cooperate America in Connecticut.

Great video and I'm sure a lot of Stamford guys both Active and Retired would like to see it.

Thanks, Willy. I don't remember Stamford in that light(I'm too young), but my parents remember it. Back in the 1980's, they lived in an apartment on the East Side near the Glenbrook area, just as the city of Stamford was starting to grow upwards. Back then, 1 Landmark Square on Broad Street was one of the only high-rises in the city and the tallest building in Fairfield County at 21 stories. Now, Stamford is like a mini-Manhattan, particularly in the South End with a bunch of new high-rises going up. Downtown, from my parents' perspective, is almost unrecognizable from what it was 30-40 years ago.

At the time of the video, the Stamford FD ran with 5 & 4, Squad, Rescue, and a Deputy Chief. I believe you are correct, Willy. Engine 16 was the 2nd Piece to the Squad. They ran with a mini-pumper with a small riding space connected to the rear step. The city also operated a civil defense firehouse on Lockwood Ave. over on the East Side, but I'm not sure if it was still in operation at the time. There was also a FD Ambulance running out of HQ and possibly out of Fire Station # 3, and maybe 5 but I'm not sure.
