Stamford, CT – At 4:07 PM, the Stamford 9-1-1 center received a call from a neighbor reporting a fire alarm going off in an adjacent unit and the caller could smell smoke. Stamford firefighters were dispatched to 42 Custer St. for the reported structure fire.
Engine 6 from the Glenbrook Fire House was first to arrive and reported “nothing showing” from the exterior. Moments after arriving, E6’s crew and the Deputy Chief were approached by a hysterical female who stated she was the occupant of the apartment. E6’s crew opened the front door to the unit and were met by a heavy smoke condition from floor to ceiling. After further questioning, the occupant stated her children were still inside.
E6’s crew immediately entered the unit to perform a search for the missing children and to locate the fire. A two year old child and a three year old child were quickly located semi-conscious lying on the floor of the second level bedroom. The children were removed by E6’s crew to the exterior where they received life-saving emergency medical care by responding firefighters and paramedics.
The small fire located on the kitchen stove top was quickly extinguished without incident. No fire, smoke, or water damage affected the adjacent living units. No firefighters were injured fighting the fire.
A total of 5 Engine Companies, 1 Truck Company, 1 Rescue Company, Deputy Chief (Shift Commander), and several support personnel operated at the scene for a total of 35 personnel.
“Tonight, the brave actions of our first arriving firefighters resulted in the successful rescue of two children. Those actions coupled with immediate life-saving resuscitative efforts by our fire and EMS personnel ended this incident with a positive outcome.” ~ Deputy Chief Eric Lorenz
Scene support was provided by the Stamford Fire Department’s Training Division, Mechanical Division, and the Stamford Police Department.
The Stamford Fire Marshal’s Office and the Stamford Police Department are investigating the cause of the fire.
