When Ship Bottom police responded to a medical call on the Fifth Street beach around 5 p.m. July 14, they found two vacationing members of the Fire Department of New York had revived an unresponsive 70-year-old man.

“Those two guys knew what they were doing,” said Ship Bottom Patrolman Anthony Lazlo, crediting Jonathan Santiago, Ladder 61, and Mike Sandhage, Ladder 22, with the successful outcome.

It took officers less than three minutes to respond to the top of the beach entrance, according to Lazlo.

“He was already back with us,” Lazlo said, adding Ship Bottom police officers took over until the Beach Haven First Aid Squad arrived on scene.

While such calls are not frequent, the number of medical calls does go up during the summer, though not too often on the beach, according to Police Chief Jonathan Potter. Still, he said, most of the medical calls during the summer are heat-related, particularly dehydration and heat exhaustion.

“They did a great job,” Potter said of everyone involved in responding to the July 14 medical call. —G.G.S
