It is absolutely outrageous & disgusting ( to be nice) what the "dealers" are doing nowadays tacking thousands over sticker price.....a year ago this was unheard of in all but the most uninitiated buyers ...in 59 yrs of buying vehicles & I have bought plenty , I have never NOT been able to negotiate an asking price DOWN..... now for example a 2022 Chevy Tahoe in NY = 4 thou over msrp take it or leave it as the dealers can't get enough vehicles built due to shortages in parts & shortages of workers in the plants...(plus if you order it from scratch the way you want it = a 2 to 3 month wait & on top of that there are certain delays or unavailable options caused by the CHIP shortage ) there are some 2022 Tahoes available on the lot in places like Washington State ...FLA & Mass that I have found online ....as far as these very few "in stock" vehicles they are usually loaded up with options that they have on vehicles on their lot for immediate sale but you have to settle for what's already in it & pay for things you do not want like a $1500. Sunroof or other expensive unwanted options they pre load them up with & you can't add things you want to an already produced vehicle PLUS you have to go & get it or pay a substantial amount to have it transported .....a word of caution on transporters = unless you really want to hire a transporter DO NOT just google any as they want your email & phone number to even entertain giving you a quote ...this results in a tremendous amount of daily emails & phone calls & text messages from transporters from all over the US as it seems they sell or trade your info to I don't know how many transporters who robo call & email blast you for weeks on end .telling you things like "we got a truck going to your Zip next week & we will give you a discount" or "my driver is going thru a divorce & really needs the work" etc ...etc.. & you can tell them you are not buying out of state or not buying at all or already bought they do not stop for weeks............. .a purchase from an out of State dealer can sometime be problematic later going to a local dealer with problems....the only good thing is that if you have a decent vehicle the prices being given to you for your Used vehicle are very good at this time.......the manufacturers themselves cop out by stating " the dealerships are privately owned & can charge what they want". ....all these facts above stated were basically born out of the bio terrorism situation I don't even know what future price gouging will be tied into the current Ukraine/Russia situation ?

I work p/t for a car rental company moving cars around in Central Illinois as well as delivering cars to a hub in Davenport that are sold cars going to dealers in the Dakotas, etc. We have almost nothing in new cars coming in from the makers in the way of cars but lots of pick me up trucks and soccer mom vehicles. No one makes a car anymore, not Ford, not Chevy, not GMC. Well not everyone is driving soccer teams to games/practice and not everyone needs a pick em up

The car purchase guideline used to be dealer invoice price plus $400 for a car. I found the invoice price, then asked how much profit they wanted to make: That's it! Never allow the MSRDP to be used.

Sadly, we live in strange times for car buying. But, you can always get an EV.

What was it my old economics teacher said? Something about "supply and demand"?

Well for the rich and well off that is not an issue for them. But for the majority of us that is something we must live with. And to tell you honestly, it sucks.

Chief,

My wife works in the auto finance industry. They are concerned with the chip shortage and to your point, the sticker prices. Regular middle class People can only afford so much.

I absolutely hate the haggling over a car price at a dealership. The last time I bought I used the buying service from AAA. I ended up with the fleet price for the vehicle and the easiest, stress free experience I ever had. After everything was agreed, the car was delivered to my house, I signed the paperwork at my kitchen table, and he drove away my trade in. Researching on line and talking over the phone to various dealers, I was comfortable with the final price.
