The city of Yonkers has a population of 200,000. It borders the Bronx to the north and has many of the same problems that most urban areas have. The southwest section of Yonkers, particularly the Nodine Hill section has many century old wood frame bldgs that are built very close together on small, narrow streets. When one of these bldgs becomes fully involved in fire it usually means extension to surrounding bldgs. The Yonkers fire dept is a very good dept although a small one. Once they reach a third alarm, all companies are at work. Any bigger than that, they call in off duty members and have to go to mutual aid including FDNY.

no mutual aid from FDNY buddy. that part u got it wrong. Now if the building is right on the border of the city to the Bronx then thats when they call in FDNY. Others departments in the county are the main ones we get mutual aid from.

You missed FDNY with a 2 alarm assignment to Oak St a couple of years ago and also a 2 alarm assignment to 85 Bronx River Rd when that large bldg burned.

Thanks for the info fellas. Looking at Yonkers' apparatus numbering system I see they're still using the Westchester County numbering system.

You are incorrect about the mutual aid plan. Yonkers will call other Westchester County paid departments for mutual aid:
Mount Vernon
New Rochelle
Greenville
Eastchester
Fairview
Hartsdale
Scarsdale
White Plains

Once this list is exhausted, FDNY will be requested and respond in accordance to thier out of town mutual aid plan.

FDNY units last responded to a Yonkers fire on 3-14-03 and 3-16-03, after the county mutual aid list was exhausted. This response has nothing to do with where the fire is. On 1-25-05, a 5th Alarm OMD fire came in on Caryl Ave. The rear of this building is Van Corlandt Park. No FDNY units were requested to the scene.

Junior, I think what truck4 stated reinforces what I said earlier that when Yonkers requests mutual aid, it includes FDNY and that FDNY has responded in the past to large scale incidents and will do so in the future if the need arises and the request is made.

For the record the fire on 1-25-05 on Caryl Ave. FDNY actually responded to that area for an odor of smoke at 7:30 and we did go down Caryl Ave and were told we were not needed. Was pretty funny to watch 11:00 news that night and see fire still raging throughout the 7story building. Dont know why Yonkers didnt use FDNY that night. If they go by above mutual aid and use FDNY last at a fire right on border then they need to change the plan. Think of repsonse times from northern paid departments to the southern end of county.

The Yonkers mutual aid system seems a little jacked up. You would think any City would utilize mutual aid based on a response time/distance factor.

I remember about 20 years ago when it was not unusual to see Dobbs Ferry and other Westchester volunteer departments responding into Yonkers for mutual aid.
