Thursday, July 16, 2009- Squad Company 252 was assigned as the 3RD DUE ENGINE on a second source for Box 0845, Rockaway Ave and Fulton Street.  Brooklyn was receiving calls for something on fire in the vicinity of that location.  First due units transmitted a 10-75 for a fire in a three story frame at 60 Somers Street, Rockaway Ave to Gaston Blvd.  Since this was the same Box location, Squad 252 was still 3RD DUE ENGINE.  As members from 252 headed toward the first due engine to stretch the second line, they noticed the brothers from the second due engine already in the process of fulfilling this responsibility.  Although those from 252 initially believed this was a gesture of kindness, perhaps it was thought they would stretch it half-way to the building and then hand it off to the 3RD DUE ENGINE, this was not the case.  After this confusion, Squad 252 was ordered to stretch a third line into the exposure and up to the roof of the fire building.  Heavy fire consumed much of the 2nd and 3rd floor.  The third line was used on the roof to extinguish the bulkhead and burning roofing material on the fire building.  At the height of the fire a 2nd Alarm was transmitted.  Several occupants, including children, were transported to the hospital in critical condition after jumping from their apartments to the yard below.  All other searches proved negative.

Don't know the time so couldn't go to the archive tapes

Probable First Alarm:
Engines: 233,231, Squad 252
Trucks:L176, TL120
BC 44

10-75 Units
E 227 or E332
L175 FAST
Rescue 2
Squad 1
BC 37 or 38
DC 15

Johnd - perhaps you can check and estimate the second alarm as you are most familiar with Brooklyn - thanks

What are the responsibilities of the second due engine at that type of fire??

Was heavy fire on arrival from the 3rd floor, was believed to be a vacant. 2nd alarm transmitted by the 1st due engine shortly after the 10-75, when the BC (BC44) arrived, he tried to transmit a 2nd alarm also, but didnt realise the engine had done it already.

Do you think there was a nice discussion afterwards as to why they didn't do their assigned task?

i know two wrongs dont make a right and not knocking eng 252 but there have been several occasions in the past when 252 took a line that japped out the 2nd due eng from this fire...and then y did they have the 3rd line? y not assist ? they were just as guitly of stretching
