Let me also add that when the closing of approximately 50 companies and the lay off of some 300 FDNY Firefighters came about due to a budget crisis during the height of the FDNY War Years, that is when the FDNY requested those members no longer take part in such a system.
A friend of mine back then was an Auxiliary Firefighter in Engine 60/Ladder 29 and he had told me about that at that time. That friend is now living in Virginia and on this site his user name is "BFD151". Now a retired Bridgeport, Ct Firefighter.
We have a few members on this site who were Auxiliary Firefighters, including "Johnd248". Also I know that "AuxWarYearsCapt", Doug M., was a member in a Queens company.

I started riding as an Aux when i turned 18 in Nov 78. In the early 80s the dept got notified dept. because they were getting Civil Defense money from govt they needed to reorganize the aux program . They had us comte to the rock the first Saturday of tne month for i think it was two hours. The officer in charge of fire emergency division ran the training. We mostly rolled hose and tied knots. I rode with eng 89 until 1991 i was also very involved with Throggs Neck Volunteer Ambulance. I was an EMT at ths time. I had a disagreement with the captain in charge of aux regarding my EMT patch on aux shirt, so i stopped riding for a period around 84-87. I went back to 89 for a short time after i got married in 85 but the house had changed quite a bit. When i first went in the junior man had 8 years on the job. We got one proby in 79 and it was fun to be there. After i went back there were a bunch of probies and nothing for aux to do. As a aside. The last fire I worked with 89 at was the gas truck crash at Bruckner and Tremont in May 1991.

I rode with 280 from June 1968 to Jan 1969 and 132 from Jan 1969 to Feb 1975 and the Auxiliary program was very active. After Feb 1975 I'd stop by the house periodically and saw that Auxiliaries had stopped riding especially after July 1975.
The program picked up again in the late 70's and continued into the 80's. I don't know when it officially ended.
When I went back for the 280/132 Centennial in 2013 I ran into 2 guys who had been Auxiliaries in 280/132 before me, but no one after me.

Please do me a favor and check out Paul Isaac on Facebook. He claims he was an AUX in the late 90's like 96. Things just did not add up for me and I am wondering if he might be a fraud please someone check this out and let me know.

I trained at the Rock under Lt William Barret Tech Management. I began as a radiological operator then moved up to FEMA Emergency Program Management. I was a Communications Specialist.
My Sponsor Company was L-118 Midaugh st with Lt "Panama" Then when i failed the physical in 91 i went into aux fire corps. This was after i graduated military school. I graduated the academy in 95 and rode officially with E-207 under Captain Charles Phaye but after the regulars complained about the compnay spic i was abandoned. I the rode with different companies around the city. The rolled with E-294 and Then tenhouse 98-99 under Chief Kelty. I was putting for E-240 when 911 occured.

[Tool bag] it also carried my programmable scanner so that i had situational awareness. You know, the thing you people didn't have on 911 when NYPD Aviation 6 warned about the impending north tower collapse and you and raffa were clueless ?

What's up guys.... I will have to check the next time I'm in my basement. I have 2 old Auxiliary journals that l use to sign in and out of quarters. I will hopefully figure out when it ended.
As Willie D stated.... I was a Aux. and assigned to Eng 319 " THE LONE WOLF ".... I started to ride legally when l was 18 back in June 1972. I was promoted to Aux. Lt in June 73 and then Aux Capt in Dec 1973. I actually started riding on our 51 Ward LaFrance in the hose bed when l was 14. I started buffing in 1959 when my dad took me to the firehouse riding my bicycle until last year 2019. Not bad for a 60 year run.
I was honored to be part of the WAR YEARS. I met some of the greatest smoke eaters in East New York and Brownsville. We interchanged with E 332 from 1972 to 1980. I rode every 3rd night on assigned interchange and then every other night when they went to the point system. I also got to know the guys from E 332 ( Capt Dick Keenan and his crew. E 332 invited me to ride with them and l did on weekends when TCU 532 was there.
I miss those days running up and down Pitkin Av with 290...103-1...103-2...RES 2...SQ 4...231...120...44-1 & 44-2 along with the TCUs...
I myself was at 319s quarters the day of the strike. I along with my Aux. Lt. refused to ride for quite a while unit the layed off firefighters were reinstated..
As far as the seating arrangement l had been fortunate enough to ride between the ECC & boss. I would be the radio man and keep track of the runs to put in the runs and workers journal in the office. During the interchange days the job tried afew different things.... First they had 332 and us swap rigs at our meeting spot since 319 did not have a RAPID WATER rig. Then second they tried to swap ECCs for the night tour. That didn't go well. Then third they left the 5th man behind. After a while that didn't fly either. The rig swap was ended when we got 290s old 72 Mack Rapid Water Reg# MP 7212 in 1975...Now that was the best rig l rode on.

I watched 6 minutes and 12 seconds of this extolling his importance. That was enough for me. By the by, Auxiliary P.O.'s do not have cap devices with numbers, or at least they didn't in the past.

89 was a four man company so there was space for me. I usually didnt get to go on interchange when they went to 45 becase 45 left a man behind. I only got to go if Lt. Mike Dunne was working he didnt mind me in the front with him. I did ride with 45 when they came up if Lt Jack Mayne was working but when i was an aux the war years had pretty much ended and 89 was very quiet. We did get busier when 72 and sat2 went out.
