"At 6:57 PM this evening the Islip Fire Department was alerted to a reported commercial structure fire at the Winter Bros Shipyard located at 21 Athasca Road. Numerous calls were being received including callers from across the canal reporting a building on fire. First to arrive was 2nd Assistant Chief Farrell who confirmed an active fire in a commercial building and transmitted the working Fire (Signal 35). Chief of Department Macchio arrived ahortly after establishing a command post and requested a 2nd Alarm mutual aid plan. Islip crews stretched three handlines to the structure to tackle fire on both the first and second floors. The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire and all searches proved negative for any victims. Due to the structure being on the canal mutual aid fire boats from the Bay Shore & East Islip Fire Departments were requested to assist with firefighting operations and to ensure the safety of all members working along the dockside of the building. The fire was brought under control in approximately one hour. Mutual aid was provided by the Bay Shore Fire Department for 1 ladder and 1 fire boat, East Islip FD for 1 engine and 1 fire boat, West Islip Fire Department for a FAST team, Islip Terrace FD for a standby engine at our headquarters, Central Islip Fire Department for a standby truck at our headquarters, and Exchange Ambulance of the Islips for EMS support and rehab. Two firefighters were treated at the scene and released. Due to fuel and hazardous materials within the building the The Town of Islip hazmat team was requested along with the NYS DEC and the U.S. Coast Guard due to potential fuel and chemical run off into the canal. The cause of the fire was not known and is currently under investigation by the Suffolk County Police Department arson squad."
