I have driven trucks for a living for many years, and both the Detroit, and Cummins diesels run about the same as for as speed depending on the axel ratio. However, Caterpillar diesels run like rabbits on an open highway. The DD series 60 has a flaw of drinking a lot of oil especially in trucks and buses. Not so sure about fire apparatus. Caterpillar no longer makes engines for commercial use except for their CT660 vocational truck. The Cummins diesel seems to be a favorite with many truck buyers, as well as bus companies. If anyone has driven the 01/02 Rear-mount Seagrave spares, compared to the newer Ferraras do those rigs seem to go faster? They got Detroit Diesel Engines in them compared to I believe all the newer rigs are running Cummins.
