"Richmond, Va. — Firefighters remain on scene battling a second-alarm fire that has destroyed a vacant church in Richmond this evening. The church was slated for apartment development, according to a sign posted outside the property.

Crews were dispatched at approximately 6:13 p.m. to the 1100 block of North 28th Street for a reported structure fire. When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy smoke and flames coming from the church, prompting an aggressive fire attack.

Officials say a second alarm was declared shortly after crews arrived, bringing in additional resources to assist with battling the blaze.

Richmond Fire Chief Jeffrey Segal confirmed to us the church was vacant at the time of the fire. Neighbors tell us the property was under redevelopment, and a sign posted at the site indicates plans to construct 15 new one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Segal said the fire has been knocked down but has not yet been officially placed under control. He also credited firefighters for protecting a nearby home located just a few feet from the flames. While the home sustained damage to its siding from the intense heat, the fire did not extend into the residence.

Segal says no injuries have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation."
