What’s causing so many multiple alarms?

And not just many 2nd alarms, this is crazy; past 24 hours there’s been 2 2nd Alarms (1 BX, 1 QN), 2 3rd Alarms (both in MN), and 2 4th alarms (1 BK, 1 QN). And a 5th alarm only last week as well.

Having worked as the Captain of Engine 26, for 8 years, I know these Broadway Theaters, and they are very complex and also often very old. No two Broadway Theaters are the same. We had a few fires in these theaters when I was active, that never amounted to much, but it was indeed very hard to locate the source of the fire due to the complex construction, that evolved over the many years since they were built. In 30 years in the FDNY, Midtown was the most complex area in NYC that I ever worked in. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired

I made this comment on another thread a week ago or so.

"My girlfriend who knows I follow this forum and fires online who has no knowledge of FDNY ops said the same thing to me last week."

She said it again today, what is going on? She works in midtown and we live in Brooklyn.

I just told her the people online are puzzled also. Major fires are up lately.

I could make a comment about reduced manning in some FDNY units. But when you appoint firefighters based on city residency, that are given a 10-point advantage just for living in the city, instead of their ability and fitness for firefighting you are rolling the dice. "Merit matters" not any other criteria. FDNY has many great firefighters who try to do their best but are they getting the support they need? laws need to be enforced and also changed to deal with the realities of firefighting in today's buildings. Flashover now happens much sooner than years ago. Some tests say in as little as 1 Minute & 34 Seconds, flashover often occurs. Just some of the problems the FDNY now faces. I love the job and wish I was 21 again but I am proud of the FDNY Firefighters who do the best they can with the problems that have been created.
