FDNY apparatus placement

I spent 20 years of my 30 years in FDNY Tower Ladders. The placement of TL-121 is outstanding and show great foresight in thinking about what area the TL Bucked may need to reach. Generally, if it all possible BACK a Midmount or Rear Mounted Tower Ladder into the fire building/s, this increases the "Scrub Area" of the TL Bucket. The "Scrub Area" = The area height wise and width wise the Tower Ladder bucket can touch. This is also true with aerial ladder unit generally. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired
 
In the FDNY it is generally not recommended to have a member on a Peaked roof unless the member is tethered to a Tower Ladder bucket or basket railing. The member in the photo is standing on a steeply pitched roof and does not appear to be tethered to anything. The fire appears to be under control. The question must be asked, what is he accomplishing? Risk alot to save alot, risk little to save little.
