To impress the world visitors here for the FIFA World Cup, HFD is fighting a huge tire recycling plant fire in East Houston.

The fire came in at 1500 hours yesterday when the heat index was 112 degrees. There's no significant exposures and the smoke plume is blowing north and is only creating a temporary landmark. All the usual suspects are in a panic on TV over the toxic pollution.

HFD transmitted three alarms just for relief and set up some master streams to impress the locals. Of course they are still operating there for the duration as well as covering FIFA FanFest and the Portugal-Uzbekistan game that starts at NRG Stadium soon. Temperature is 92 degrees and heat index 104 at 1100 hours.

48 hours down the road, HFD is still operating five engines, two ladders and one medic on the scene. HazMat 22 is still here, but their quarters are just over on Harrisburg Blvd and 78th St. Present heat index is 109 degrees. Seems like a great opportunity for the junior members to get some practice skeeting water out in the sun.

In other news, today is the first day fireworks go on sale for the Forth of July celebration. Of course, these are illegal in the city. This will make no discernable impact. It will sound more like ordnance than fireworks and by the evening of the Forth it seems like "The First Day at the Somme".

A friend and I were visiting HFD Station 46 yesterday and got an overview of the operations.
Quite a show.
Lol!

Quite a show.....or quite a circus?

From what I know over the last 50 odd years (back to the former vollie house on England Street) 46's has always been a hand full for some poor chief; not including firefighting.

And the best part- second or third due (depending on which side of Fannin Street) to the world's largest medical center and Sesame and Selinsky Streets.
