    Question On A Photo

The 1940's NYC tax photo site is pretty damn awesome. Spent some time clicking on buildings around E82/L31 to see what the old neighborhoods looked like. Very interesting. Shame it all went by the wayside. Looked like a nice place to live in the 40's. Also explored the area around what used to...

    NYC fire protection

You also have to keep in mind the population being talked about is estimated census population. If you research groups and sites tracking immigration, there is an estimated 500,000 to 800,000 illegal immigrants living in NYC, most likely living in illegally modified (Black Sunday) tenements etc...

    12/20/21 Brooklyn 2nd Alarm Box 2622

Can't imagine what it's like to be working in a FH and it gets shut down. You put everything you have into a place, hard work, pride, learning the area and it's residents, then getting kicked in the teeth. Growth is one thing, combining single units into one station etc...201/114, 63/39, 15/18...

    12/20/21 Brooklyn 2nd Alarm Box 2622

I was thinking the same thing. Just doing a quick tally of Engines, Ladders, Rescue and Squad...That's 130+ FF's. My Dept doesn't have 130 FF's on the floor in all our stations combined during a given tour.

    Housewatch Journals

Quite a few years (20+) back, we had a gentleman who was a non-active, associate member of my volunteer firehouse in Maryland. He was a public relations guru, emcee for events. This gentleman's father was a NYC Fireman from 1939 to 1961 in Ladder 17. As the story went, his father was working a...

    First due areas

In relation to the response area discussion, I have a question... In my department, we carry map books for our first due area and all companies that border our district. In addition, we have a "transfer" map book in the station watch office for a fill-in/relocator/transfer company to use/carry...

    Online FDNY Maps

Great work by all of the members posting incidents and rundowns. Being from a different metro region and a casual FDNY follower through this website, does anyone have online maps that shows each Engine Company response areas? During visits to various firehouses, I have seen similar poster size...

What is mounted to the doors and windows on the cab of Ladder 44? Wire mesh for "civil disturbance" protection from projectiles?

FDNY and NYC Firehouses and Fire Companies

Not quite the topic but close enough...Does anyone have (or now where to get) a list of old FDNY stations no longer in use or closed that are still standing? I take time in my travels to photograph old fire stations for their design and architecture. I would like to take some picture next time I...

    Hatzolah EMS

I have seen a lot of the Hatzolah EMS in some of the photo slideshows. Just wanted to know a little about them. Are they Paid or Volunteer? Who dispatches them?  How are they notified of a run? What areas do they cover?

    Pumper and pumping operations

Through the many buff photo sites, I have seen many pumper drivers don't use their rigs front intakes when on a hydrant. These intakes appear to be 4 1/2" or 5" with 5" intake sleeves. In these pictures they have bent and manipulated a 3" rubber hard suction hose into a pretzel and using what...

Morning Pride Ben 2 Helmets...what is your opinion?

Looking for some information about and an assessment of the Morning Pride Ben 2 Helmet. Any and all information helpful. I have always used Cairns leathers and it's time for a new lid, but in this economy $500+ is a little unrealistic for a new helmet. Thanks in advance for any info or opinions...

    Keys...

I have noticed in a lot of picture slideshows of incidents, most, if not all the members have a key ring with one or two keys on them, clipped to a clasp on their turnout coat. Any clue what they're for?
