Great article! These have evidently become more and more commonplace throughout NYC. First one I remember was in the fall of 83...a complex on 22nd street in Manhattan. Multiple alarm fire that was featured in a subsequent WNYF as Built to Burn. Five tenements renovated and interconnected with a continuous hallway. Party wall balconies in the rear. Bulkheads removed and one scuttle for the entire run. But a seventh floor added as up and down duplex with entrance from the sixth....doors on the seventh serving the upper floor of the duplex...heavily secured as they were mostly bedrooms. Seventh floor addition had a mansard roof...sloping away and not easily identifiable from the street. Tons of stories about this job, but two men from 11 truck (one a young ff at the time JS...awarded a medal for his actions here and the other a senior, terrific ff FS, never returned to full duty) trapped on that seventh floor. Found virtually unconcious by two members of E28 and removed up through the scuttle and by TL in a stokes. Drill drill drill. "What would I do in this situation?". Stay safe.
