We Spoke To The Diner, Who Said The Fire Was Not In The Ductwork But in between An Old Wall Due To The Heat

My former unit Engine 26 1st due on the 2nd Alarm. Still nice to see that Engine 26 still picks up work over a large area of Midtown Manhattan. Duck work fires tend to be very labor intensive or those in areas surrounding duct work, as they penetrate multiple floors, ceilings and sometimes also the roof. 1st thing is to trigger the duct extinguishing system, unless that has already been done. Then often best tactic is handline to termination of the duct both at the bottom and top. Apply water into the duct from above and below and hope the water and/or the steam from the streams knocks the fire down. You need a lot of ladder companies to open every point along the duct to ensure that fire has not spread out of the duct or if it has that fire is fully extinguished. Working in Midtown and Lower Manhattan for over 25 years I had quite a few of these fires.
