I always thought the idea of consolidating those fire departments back then was a bad idea . Now this story confirms it
I wonder if the other three original member are going to survive this

The department never really recovered since the 2008 recession
Also Mayor Stack (Union City's mayor) is an idiot

Why? I have friends who were there when it happened and they said it significantly improved the department.

The 2008 recession affected the department to where they had to rotationally close engine companies. They have since fixed that issue. The issue now is between mayors.

I understand that, I was just curious as to E812's misgivings over consolidation.

It sure sounds like it and if those communities can break away from North Hudson regional they should do so and quickly

Consolidation is a good thing when the politics and ego's are kept out of the equation. If consolidation is not an option then a good automatic aid agreement is the next best thing. Most areas are starved of staffing so extra companies are having to respond just to get a proper initial fire attack. Give the close proximity and the string of adjacent cities, it just makes sense from a fiscal basis to have some sort of consolidation. Enter the political grandstanding and everyone gets screwed.

Just so I’m not missing anything, this is being fueled by issues with the school department? Anyone here work near these guys? It seams since the merger they are all in newer trucks and equipment? I know South Metro Fire in CO was a merger of many departments and it’s worked amazing out there.

One of my professors in college was a Chief there, and he always talked about how much better it was after the merger. Before the merger, the individual departments were incredibly small.

Ok thank you, that was my understanding as well. I’m from Mass and we’re all pretty small jobs in my area, 5-9 a shift and we often joke about making a larger department. Share resources, dispatch closer houses etc.

North Hudson F&R actually contracts out there fleet maintenance to North Bergen DPW. Wonder what they will come up with now. None of these other towns can come close to North Bergen's facility.

They list a exit clause to be executed. Wonder what it is.
