He began his life saving career working with the NYC Health and Hospitals Ambulance Service before taken over by the FDNY, known today as the FDNY/EMS.
He then became a Washington, D.C. Firefighter working in one of D.C.s busiest fire companies and performing a heroic rescue which he never received the proper recognition for.
But his goal in life was to become a New York City Firefighter which he accomplished and during his career he worked in some of the FDNYs busiest companies.
Those companies included Ladder 112, Engine 88, Ladder 38 and Ladder 5.
His wife wrote a book titled: "By the grace of God", telling her survival story of working on an upper floor of the World Trade Center on 9/11 while wondering if her husband is alive as well.
He also wrote a book titled "They Saved New York".
He has also contributed to this site with his "Glory Days stories and photos"
I am talking about "JohnnyGage", aka Dan P., a good friend to many of us here.
Johnny, I once learned from an FDNY member,
"Don't brag about yourself - let others do it for you".
Hope you don't mind me doing it for you, Dan
So Mr Gage, I have a song here with photos, that I would like to dedicate to you.
I'm sure some of us will remember this.
